The leader of the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) V Anandasangaree has turned down an offer from President Mahinda Rajapaksha to contest local elections in the North with the SLFP. The TULF has aligned itself with the People’s Liberation Organization of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE) and Eelam People’s Revolutionary Liberation Front (EPRLF) to contest local polls. Anangasangaree has also requested that local election be postponed as still people in the north are grieving from the loss of relatives who lost their lives in the Mulaithive battle. He says that it would not be appropriate to campaign for votes when people are grieving and looking for relatives in IDP camps. Anandasangaree told the BBC in an interview that conditions in IPD camps are horrible “Health, water and sanitation situation is horrible. Many people are having skin diseases as they didn’t get a chance to have a shower for days because of water shortage. “Pregnant mothers and newborn babies go through a harrowing time in the camps due to scorching heat,” said Anandasangaree who has been critical of the LTTE and praised by President Rajapaksha as a moderate.
