Dr. Kumar Rupasinghe says that the war in Sri Lanka is in the last lap as any war has phases of beginning, middle and final stages.

He made these comments addressing a function held in the Bandarnaike Memorial Conference Hall yesterday (25) to mark the launch of nine books written by him.

Mr. Rupasinghe who has experience in actively participating in international conflict resolving said, “Earlier, there was only the armament competition between the two major powers. There were only 32 civil wars in which more than 1000 persons were killed per year. There were 88 wars in which less than 500 persons were killed.

“Sixteen of the serious conflicts have been resolved now. Eight more are in the process of a political settlement. Two are to commence dialogues soon. Only six civil wars including the conflict in Sri Lanka are remaining.”

Mr. Rupasinghe said that the war in Sri Lanka dragged for 30 years, but would not drag for 30 more years since any war has a beginning, middle and final stages adding that the conflict here is in the final stage. He asked from the warring parties who had entered into war with determination to win, not to target civilians through bomb explosions and air raids.

Pointing out that the cause of war in Sri Lanka is ‘not identifying and listening to the other’, Dr. Rupasinghe said that war can be ended if the people’s majority would be anti war.

Rejecting the official figures of 80,000 deaths due to this war in the past 30 years, Dr. Rupasinghe said that according to his records the death toll was 240,000 and 200,000 more had disappeared.

Many elites including the leaders of all religions and local and foreign intellectuals participated in the function.

  1. The situation is changing very much. If we do not solve the problems in Sri Lanka I am beginning to feel India is going to break up. With the comment of the Sri Lanka President not bothered about Karunanithy and all party concern we are leading the emotions into permanent territory. I always felt the more the time we do not resolve the more uncertain situation will develop. Now we have many armed groups in Sri Lanka. It is inevitable it will spill over to Tamil Nadu and the Leader of the 55 million chief minister will not continually watch a leader of the 19 million people by his door step. So I hope the wisdom of Sri Lankan leaders must act quickly otherwise we will have a nation of India going to split up like the Soviet Union and will become a serious consequence for Sri Lanka.
